M/S Rio Verde To Rio Verde on the "Ships starting with R" page. Owner: A/S Sobral
According to the external website that I've linked to at the end of this page, Rio Verde took part in the slow, eastbound North Atlantic Convoy SC 45, leaving Sydney, C.B. on Sept. 18-1941, arriving Liverpool Oct. 4. The Norwegian Bjerka, Libra, Nea, Orania, Snar, Solhavn, Trolla and Varanger are also listed. Rio Verde had a general cargo and sailed in station 123 of the convoy. She later joined Convoy OS 10, leaving Liverpool on Oct. 25-1941, arriving Freetown on Nov. 18 (station 23). Other Norwegian ships taking part were Fana, San Andres and Somerville. In fact, Rio Verde and Fana are said to have collided on this voyage, causing Fana to have to return to port. Rio Verde headed in the other direction again at the beginning of the new year, sailing in station 63 of Convoy SL 97, which departed Freetown on Jan. 4-1942 and arrived Liverpool on the 24th. The Norwegian Gausdal also took part. Follow the links provided for more details on this convoy, as well as those mentioned above. The following month she's listed in the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 68*, which left Liverpool on Febr. 19-1942 and dispersed on March 9 (and from which the Norwegian Tyr was sunk). Other Norwegian ships in this convoy were Aun, Carrier, Danio, Evanger, and Ingertre. She subsequently returned to the U.K. with Convoy SC 77, which left Halifax on March 30 and arrived Liverpool on Apr. 16. Rio Verde's destination is given as Manchester, general cargo, and she was again in the company of several other Norwegian ships, as will be seen by following the link to SC 77. She now headed back across the Atlantic with the westbound Convoy ON 90*, together with Aun, Bjørkhaug, Borgholm, Heimgar, Lido, Lisbeth (returned), Nea, Norjerv, Norvarg, Ørnefjell, Selbo, Snar, and Suderøy. This convoy departed Liverpool on Apr. 28-1942 and arrived Halifax on May 15, but Rio Verde continued to New York, where she arrived on May 18. At the end of June-1942 we find her in the slow Sydney (C.B.)-U.K. Convoy SC 89, general cargo for Garston, heading back to New York at the beginning of Aug.-1942 with the westbound Convoy ON 118* (departure Liverpool Aug. 1, dispersed Aug. 20), together with Dux, Evanger, Nea, Norvarg, Spero and Tore Jarl. The following month she joined Convoy SC 100 (departure Halifax Sept. 12-1942, arrival Liverpool Sept. 28), and rescued some of the survivors from Empire Hartebeeste, which had been torpedoed on Sept. 20, the Norwegian Norhauk rescuing the other survivors (ref. external link at the end of this page). Rio Verde returned to New York at the end of Oct. in the westbound Convoy ON 142*, departing Liverpool Oct. 30, arriving New York Nov. 21. This convoy also had several other Norwegian ships, namely Bestik (returned), Carmelfjell, Fjordheim, Jenny, Kirsten B, Norvarg, Primo, Sevilla, Solitaire, Temeraire and Vinland. According to the external website already mentioned, she now went back to the U.K. with the slow Convoy SC 113, which left New York on Dec. 12-1942 and arrived Liverpool on Jan. 2-1943, again with a number of Norwegian ships: Askot, Hallanger, Henrik Ibsen, Kirsten B, Lisbeth, Norvarg, O. B. Sørensen, Ruth I, and Titanian. Rio Verde headed back to New York again at the beginning of Febr.-1943 with the westbound Convoy ON 165; follow the link for more convoy details. Rio Verde reported boiler trouble, eventually broke down and fell out of the convoy - see Commodore's narrative for ON 165. For information on some of her other convoy voyages, please follow the instructions provided at the first external link below. As will be seen, among others, she made several voyages to Trinidad in 1943 and 1944, and one in Febr.-1945.
