This is a post war picture of this ship, when named Arpeco.
Source: Mogens Rasmussen (see Post War details below).

Owner: Rederiselskapet Gezina, Farsund
Manager: Th. Brøvig, Farsund
Tonnage:
1828 (1328?) gt, 1054 net, 2900 tdwt.

She had been launched as War Beaver (Cunard Steamship Co., Ltd - The Shipping Controller, London), but requisitioned by U.S. Shipping Board. Collided with D/S Hazel Branch on Jan.16-1919 off Cardiff and sank - raised and repaired. Managed by Th. Brøvig, Farsund as Gezina from 1920.

Captain: Oscar Haavin

 Some War Voyages:

Gezina, bound for London with aluminum bars, is mentioned in connection with the slow Sydney (C.B.)-U.K. Convoy SC 3, from which the Norwegian Lotos was sunk in Sept.-1940, and which had a large number of Norwegian ships. However, there's a note in one of the documents for this convoy saying that she was "not traced". Note that she does not appear among the ships in the Advance Sailing Telegram for this convoy, and is listed as cancelled from the next convoy, SC 4, but eventually sailed in Convoy SC 5 (her cargo is now given as paper and pulp wood).

In Apr.-1941, Gezina, bound for Garston with a cargo of lumber, is listed in Convoy SC 28 (having previously been cancelled from Convoy SC 25). There's a note in the report for SC 28 saying that the engineer was transferred to the Ocean Escort HMS Chitral for medical treatment on Apr. 10, but was later returned to Gezina.

In Febr.-1942 she shows up in Convoy RU 11 from Reykjavik to the U.K., bound for Clyde in ballast. In Apr. that same year we find her in Convoy RU 18, and at the end of the following month she's listed in the slow Sydney (C.B.)-U.K. Convoy SC 85, cargo of lumber for Grimsby. In Aug. she joined the Sydney, C.B. portion of Convoy SC 96, again with a cargo of lumber for Grimsby.

According to the 2nd external website that I've linked to below Gezina was scheduled for Convoy OS 55/KMS 27 in Sept./Oct.-1943, but did not sail.

She was in the eastbound Convoy KMS 44 which fought off German air attacks between Algiers and Cape Carbon on March 19-1944. 4 aircraft were shot down (according to "Nortraships flåte"), no ships were damaged. D/S Topdalsfjord was also in this convoy, which departed Gibraltar on March 17 and arrived Port Said on the 27th.

 POST WAR:

Renamed Ragni in 1946 for Rederi A/S Nina (Erling Mortensen), Oslo. Owned from 1956 by Pedersen & Berge, Kristiansand, renamed Arpeco in 1957. Sold in Oct.-1957 to D/S A/S Magnhild (Martin Clausen), Haugesund, renamed Force in 1958. Sold in March-1959 after having been laid up for a long time, to Norsk Skipsopphugning Co., Grimstad (breakers). The picture on this page, when named Arpeco was received from Mogens Rasmussen. It was taken by him in Bornholm early 1957. Mogen says: Arpeco is obviously having a cargo of wood again after discharging, which can be seen from the stantions at the deck, and of the derricks on the aft-deck beeing tied up to the mast. She is down on the marks, but if she is discharging here or only is in port for repair, is difficult to say. The Island with its location in the middle of the southern Baltic Ocean was before often used as shelter in winterstorms".

Historical Index of the Great Lakes - type "Gezina" in the search field for 'vessel', then on the page that comes up, click in the little box with the item number for Lake Erie. It has quite a bit of information on this ship (dimensions and tonnage are a little different from what I've given above). A click in the picture thumbnail will bring up a larger photo, looks like it was taken while building.

OS and OS/KMS Convoys - This website lists all the ships in quite a few of these convoys, along with their convoy stations and info on their destination. As can be seen Gezina is mentioned in Convoy OS 55/KMS 27, as are several other Norwegian ships.

This company had also had another Gezina, originally delivered as American Acamas in 1897, 1860 gt, sold to Th. Brøvig, Farsund in 1909 and renamed Gezina. Disappeared in Dec.-1918, voyage Rio de Janeiro-Baltimore.
