2010 gt

Built by Antwerp Engineering Co. Ltd., Hoboken, Holland in 1924. Previous name Dunston until 1929.

 Misc. War Voyages:

Don is listed among the ships in the Halifax-U.K. Convoy HX 58 in July-1940. In Sept.-1940 we find her in station 33 of Convoy OA 216, which left Methil on Sept. 18-1940. She was in ballast for New Brunswick on that occasion (ref. external links below). She returned to the U.K. the following month with Convoy HX 83, cargo of lumber for London, station 12.

In Jan.-1941 she joined convoy OB 272, which left Liverpool on Jan. 10, dispersed on the 14th - again, see external link below. She was scheduled for the slow Halifax-U.K. Convoy SC 23 in Febr.-1941, but did not sail. She also cancelled from SC 24, but eventually got away with SC 25 on March 10. Her destination is given as London, cargo of lumber. In June/July that same year she shows up in Convoy HX 135, bound for Newport with lumber. However, she returned to port and was instead sent to the slow Convoy SC 36, which left Sydney, C.B. on July 1 and arrived Liverpool on the 19th (available at external link below). She returned across the Atlantic in Aug. with the westbound Convoy ON 7; her destination is given as St. John's. The external site already mentioned now has her heading in the other direction with Convoy SC 47 (left Sydney, C.B. Sept. 29, arrived Liverpool Oct. 20). - this convoy is not available on my own site.

In Jan-1942 she's listed as bound for Sheet Harbour in the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 55* (left Liverpool Jan. 8, dispersed Jan. 26). In March/Apr.-1942 she sailed in Convoy SC 76, steel and wood pulp for Preston, returning to Halifax with the westbound Convoy ON 88*, which left Liverpool on Apr. 21. She subsequently went back to the U.K. at the end of May in Convoy SC 85, and at the end of June she joined the westbound Convoy ON 108*, again bound for Halifax. She was scheduled for the Sydney, C.B. portion of Convoy SC 95 at the beginning of Aug. that year, but instead joined the next convoy, SC 96, cargo of lumber for Immingham, heading in the other direction again the following month with the westbound Convoy ON 130*, which left Liverpool on Sept. 12 and arrived New York on the 30th - Don, however, was bound for Halifax again. There's a ship by this name mentioned in connection with the U.K.-Iceland Convoy UR 46 the following month, but this must have been the British ship by this name, because going back to the external site below, we find the Norwegian Don in Convoy SC 105 at that time. This convoy originated in New York on Oct. 11 and arrived Liverpool on the 31st; Don is said to have joined this convoy from Halifax. Towards the end of the following month she's listed in the westbound Convoy ON 148*, leaving Liverpool on Nov. 23, arriving New York on Dec. 13. Don's destination is given as Barbados on that occasion.

I also have a snippet of information saying that a ship by this name was in Augusta in Aug.-1944, departing for Naples on Aug. 10 - again, note that there was also a British ship named Don.

* All the ON convoys mentioned here are available and will be added to individual pages in my Convoys section in due course, along with further details on each. In the meantime, please go to these convoys in the section listing ships in all ON convoys.

OB (& OA) convoys - OA 216 is included. Another section of the site also has her in OB 272, and here's SC 36, SC 47, and SC 105, all mentioned in my text above.
