CONVOY HX 183

Convoy HX 183 Cruising Order
Departed Halifax on Apr. 2-1942 and arrived Liverpool on the 15th (Arnold Hague also gives 23 ships).
Received from Ted Agar, England.
Supplemented with info from a document received from Tony Cooper, England (his source: Public Records Office, Kew).

Br=British, Du-Dutch, Norw=Norwegian, Sw=Swedish.

Norw. tanker Svenør - for Clyde. Had been sunk en route to Halifax on March 27-1942, see my page about Svenør.
Pandorian - general cargo for Liverpool. Listed in HX 184.
Athelchief - tanker, bound for Mersey. Listed in HX 184.
British Power - tanker, bound for Bowling. Listed in HX 184.
British Glory - Admiralty tanker, bound for Scapa. Also cancelled from HX 184 - listed in SC 79.
Rio Novo - general cargo for Bristol. Listed in HX 184.
Robert F. Hand - tanker, bound for Avonmouth. Listed in HX 184.
Also, according to notes for Convoy SC 78, Empire Marlowe and Empire Carey in that convoy came from HX 183.

* Empire Johnson is listed as cancelled from the slow Convoy SC 77.



The ships left in the following sequence:
The first vessel to leave at 10:45 was the British liner Akarao, followed at 11:20 by Manchester Merchant (Flagship). Then with a few mintues between each ship the following went out: Manchester Trader, Dolabella, Eulima, San Ernesto, Dromus, Empire Johnson (crated planes), Morgenen, Curacao (Dutch liner. At least 4 tanks on her decks), Thorhild, Pacific Shipper (Airplane crates), Solfonn, British Fidelity, Heranger (4 bombers on after deck and crated planes on foredeck), Seminole, Egyptian Prince, Amastra, Nueva Granada, Haakon Hauan, Empire Coral, Axel Johnson. The last to go at 2:09 was the British freighter Glenstrae.
