D/S Carmelfjell To Carmelfjell on the "Ships starting with C" page. Manager: Olsen & Ugelstad, Oslo Built in Oslo 1935.
Carmelfjell, bound for London with general cargo, is listed in the Halifax-U.K. Convoy HX 48 in June-1940. She was scheduled for Convoy HX 73 in Sept.-1940, but instead joined the next convoy, HX 74, joining with the Sydney (C.B.) section, bound for Glasgow with a general cargo. As can be seen by following the links, other Norwegian ships also took part. In Nov. that same year she's listed in Convoy OB 241, which left Liverpool on Nov. 9 and dispersed on the 14th. No destination is provided. Please go to the first external website that I've linked to at the end of this page for more on the OB convoys. In Aug.-1941 we find her in Convoy HX 143, together with the Norwegian Thorshavn, Belinda, Mosli, Andrea Brøvig, Ravnefjell, Katy, Salamis, Primero, Benwood and Petter. HX 143 departed Halifax on Aug. 5 and arrived Liverpool on the 20th. Carmelfjell, bound for Bathurst, N.B., subsequently joined the westbound Convoy ON 16 the following month. Towards the end of that year, in Dec.-1941, she shows up in the slow Sydney C.B.-U.K. Convoy SC 58, general cargo for Manchester. Another section of the external website mentioned above has Carmelfjell in Convoy OS 17 in Jan./Febr.-1942, together with a few other Norwegian ships. She was on a voyage from Liverpool to Bathurst/Freetown/Takoradi in station 33 of the convoy. She's also listed in Convoy SL 105 going in the other direction, leaving Freetown on Apr. 3-1942, arriving Liverpool on the 22nd. Click on the link provided for further details. In May-1942 she joined the westbound North Atlantic Convoy on 94*, but returned to port, subsequently joining ON 96*, general cargo for Montreal. In July-1942 she's listed in the slow Sydney (C.B.)-U.K. Convoy SC 91, general cargo for Glasgow, returning to Sydney, C.B. the following month with the westbound Convoy ON 121*. She must have gone back to the U.K. again, because at the end of Oct. that same year she shows up in the westbound Convoy ON 142*, this time bound for New York. She's also listed in the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ONS 7 in May-1943, and is said to have joined from Iceland on May 12. This convoy will be updated - in the meantime, please go to ONS 7 in the section listing ships in all ONS convoys.
