M/T Alar
Updated July 8-2008

To Alar on the "Ships starting with A" page.

This shows her as Aslaug Røgenæs (ref. Post War details at the end of this page).
From Sverre Johansen's collection. I'm not entirely sure this is the right ship(?)

Pictures of Alar are available on this external page (click in them to enlarge).

Owner: Skibs-A/S Preba
Manager: Prebensen & Blakstad, Risør
Tonnage:
9430 gt

Delivered in Jan.-1939 from Sir James Laing & Sons Ltd., Sunderland as Alar to Skibs-A/S Preba (Prebensen & Blakstad), Risør. 9430 gt, 5695 net, 14 660 tdwt, 483.6' x 68.3' x 36.2', 7 cyl. 2 tev Wallsend Slipway-Sulzer, 4100 bhp, 13 knots.

Captain: Jens. A. Kragholm, replaced in 1943 by Captain Larsen.

Radio operator on this ship when the war started was Stein Stendal. (Also served on Inger Lise as 2nd mate).

Related items on this website:
A Guestbook message posted by Rick Pitz, informing me that Alar was in Convoy GAT 16, which left Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for Trinidad on Oct. 22-1942. This agrees with the information found in A. Hague's Voyage Record below. (Alar's destination is given as Caripito in Rick's document).
Norwegian War Graves - In the Norwegian magazine "Krigsseileren", No. 1/1985 I've come across the names of 16 Norwegians who were buried at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Saranac Lake, NY (please follow the link for more details on the Norwegian war graves at Saranac Lake). One of them was Haakon Andreas Engh from Alar, who died in July-1945. According to "Våre falne", a series of 4 books naming Norwegians who died during the war, Haakon Andreas Engh, carpenter, was injured after 3 torpedoeings of Alar and admitted to Gabriel Sanatorium in Halifax(? - this is incorrect, the sanatorium was in the state of New York, not far from Saranac Lake) where he died on July 17-1945. However, I have no information that Alar was ever torpedoed, but on the other hand there's an able seaman by this name in the crew list for Høegh Giant. Additionally, there's a cook named Haakon Engh in the crew list for Gro (may not be the same person, of course).

Her voyages are listed on these original images from the Norwegian National Archives:
(unfortunately, Page 2 has information missing in the margin)
Page 1 | Page 2 | Page 3 | Page 4 | Page 5 | Page 6 | Page 7 | Page 8

Please compare the above voyages with Arnold Hague's Voyage Record below.

 Voyage Record
From Sept.-1939 to Dec.-1945:

(Received from Don Kindell - His source: The late Arnold Hague's database).

Follow the convoy links provided for more information on them, other Norwegian ships are also named (where the "Convoy" column is left blank, it means that convoy is not known). Note that some of the listings may be incomplete.

Please be aware that errors may exist and some voyages are missing from this record.

It'll be noticed, when clicking on some of the links, that Alar's destination is given as Carapito in some cases; this should be Caripito and has been corrected in the record below wherever it occurs (Carapito is in Portugal, while Caripito is in Venezuela). Since the listing on the archive document does not start until Apr.-1940, the accuracy of the 1939 voyages and early 1940 voyages below cannot be confirmed.

Notes:

As can be seen, Alar made no voyages to the U.K. at all during the war. When Norway was invaded on Apr. 9-1940, she was on her way from Naples to Curacao - see Page 1. It'll be noticed, when going to the various archive documents (and Voyage Record above) that she occasionally had long stays in port, with a particularly long stay in Boston in the beginning of 1945 (Page 7).

According to A. Hague, she sailed independently until May-1942, when she joined Convoy TH NN 2 from Trinidad to Halifax (via Bermuda). The Norwegian Britamer is also included in this convoy.

From then on she usually sailed in convoy, with a few independent voyages in between.

I've come across a snippet of information saying that Alar was in a convoy from Puerto la Cruz on VE day, and that she arrived New York on May 14(?)-1945. A. Hague has included her in Convoy GN 203, though this convoy arrived New York on May 10, having sailed from Guantanamo on May 3 (other Norwegian ships are also named, see the external link provided within the Voyage Record). According to Page 7 of the archive documents, she had been in Puerto la Cruz the previous month, travelling from there to Curacao, where she arrived on Apr. 29, continuing to Guantanamo that same day in order to join GN 203 on May 3. The archive document lists several voyages to Puerto la Cruz in the course of 1945. (It looks like she spent almost a month in New York that summer, possibly for various repairs and general overhaul?). See also Page 8, which shows further voyages to Puerto la Cruz - this document has her voyages to Apr.-1946.

 POST WAR:

Sold in Oct.-1951 to p.r. D/S A/S Theologos (N. Røgenæs), Haugesund and renamed Aslaug Røgenæs. Laid up at Bøvågen from Febr.-1958, then sold in 1960 to British Iron & Steel Corporation and allocated to Hughes Bolckow Ltd. for breaking up at Blyth, where she arrived on April 12-1960.
