As can be seen from the above Voyage Record, Alar made no voyages to the U.K. during the war. She sailed independently until May-1942, when she joined Convoy TH NN 2 from Trinidad to Halifax (via Bermuda). The Norwegian Britamer is also included in this convoy.

From then on she usually sailed in convoy, with a few independent voyages in between.

I've come across a snippet of information saying that Alar was in a convoy from Puerto la Cruz on VE day, and that she arrived New York on May 14-1945. This fits in with the fact that she's listed in Convoy GN 203, though this convoy arrived New York on May 10-1945, having originated in Guantanamo on May 3. According to her Voyage Record, she had been in Puerto la Cruz at the end of Apr., travelling from there to Curacao, where she arrived on Apr. 29, continuing to Guantanamo (Gitmo) that same day in order to join GN 203 on May 3. As can be seen in her Voyage Record, she subsequently made several voyages to Puerto la Cruz in the course of 1945. (It looks like she spent almost a month in New York in June/July-1945, possibly for various repairs and general overhaul?).

In the Norwegian magazine "Krigsseileren", No. 1/1985 I've come across the names of 16 Norwegians who are buried at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Saranac, NY. One of them was Haakon Andreas Engh from Alar, who died in July-1945. Please go to Norwegian War Graves on my Memorials page for more information about this Norwegian memorial in Saranac. According to the book "Våre falne", a series of 4 books listing Norwegian casualtis during WW II, Haakon Andreas Engh, carpenter, was injured after 3 torpedoeings of Alar and admitted to Gabriel Sanatorium in Halifax(? - this must be an error, should probably be New York) where he died on July 17-1945. However, I have no information that Alar was ever torpedoed, but there's an able seaman by this name in the crew list for Høegh Giant. Additionally there's a cook named Haakon Engh in the crew list for Gro (may not be the same man, of course).

POST WAR:

Sold in Oct.-1951 to p.r. D/S A/S Theologos (N. Rogenæs), Haugesund and renamed Aslaug Rogenæs. Laid up at Bøvågen from Febr.-1958, then sold in 1960 to British Iron & Steel Corporation and allocated to Hughes Bolckow Ltd. for breaking up at Blyth, where she arrived on April 12-1960.
