D/S Cresco To Cresco on the "Ships starting with C" page. Manager: E. B. Aaby, Oslo Built by Huiskens & van Dijk, Dordrecth, The Netherlands in 1916.
Captain: Ingebrigt Teigland, later J. Skylvik, who had previously served on Thore Hafte (until 1944).
Cresco is listed in the U.K.-Norway Convoy ON 16 at the end of Febr.-1940. Towards the end of March we find her in Convoy ON 21 to Norway, returning to the U.K. the following month with Convoy HN 24, which arrived Methil on Apr. 7-1940; in other words, she got out of Norway just before the German invasion (Apr. 9). Several other Norwegian ships took part in all these convoys. In Sept.-1940 she's listed in station 83 of Convoy OA 216, which left Methil on Sept. 18-1940. She was in ballast for Chatham, N.B. on that occasion (ref. external links below). At the end of the following month she appears in the slow Sydney (C.B.)-U.K. Convoy SC 9, bound for Boston. In Sept.-1941 she's mentioned, with a cargo of coal for Iceland, in the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 14. Cresco had a few trips across the Atlantic, but was mostly in service on the coast of England and Scotland. She took part in Operation Overlord (Normandie) as ammunition and supply ship, arriving June 9-1944, departing June 17 to pick up another cargo. Related external links: Lillesand Sjømannsforening's website (Lillesand Seamen's Association) has a picture of this ship, along with pictures of several other Norwegian ships.
