The British steamers WANDBY and RUPERRA were sunk by torpedo late on the 19th October 1940 northwest of Ireland while sailing in the eastbound convoy HX-79. The times 2322 and 2323 (BST) for the torpedo hits given in many wartime reports and official British postwar Naval Staff Histories are very probably incorrect when compared to the relevant war diaries of the German U-boats U 46 and U 47, which are presently attributed with these losses. Hence, there is a good deal of confusion about the correct attribution of these two ships to the reported torpedo attacks.
Seven survivors from the RUPERRA were picked up by the S/S INDUNA and later landed in Britain, while 34 crewmen from the WANDBY were rescued by HMS Angel and landed at Belfast.
I wonder if anyone out here has ever located or copied the post-action survivor interrogation reports of crewmembers from both ships. Their content might shed some new light regarding attack times and/or the sequence of events aboard these two ships during the attacks in order to sort out things properly.
If so, I would greatly appeciate it if these could be shared here.
