Bari was attacked on 2nd. Dec. 43 by 105 Ju88 aircraft. For twenty minutes the British controlled port was pounded with high explosives; 17 ships were destroyed, 8 others were badly damaged; 38,000 tons of cargo were sunk, over 1000 Allied military personnel and seamen, together with Italian civilians, died. Flames reached over a hundred feet as ammunition ships blew up and aviation fuel ignited. The harbour was congested with Allied shipping. Defence of the port against aerial attack was largely up to the ships themselves. -snip for brevity-
Moored stern on to the jetty was Devon Coast 646grt; alongside lay the Norwegian Lom. Both were straddled by bombs, fire raged all around them. With a bright green flash, Lom blew up.

This list is great to have!!

However, I only have 3 casualties listed for Lom, I get the understanding the rest survived, though the ship was a total loss (maybe my sources are wrong).

Hi Siri,

I quote from the Dutch author L.L. von Münching
"De Nederlandse koopvaardijvloot in de Tweede Wereldoorlog", volume 2. His bibliography lists a few sources:

An article in the US Naval Institute Proceedings, year 1967 by D.M. Saunders "The Bari incident"
Other than that, I can't say where he got his info from

Hallo

Good listing. Do you know, which of the damaged ship came back to duty during the war and which after the war ?

I know that Vest came not back to duty during wartime. The repair was finished after the war, but for the other ship i don't have this information.

Best regards
Axel van Eesbeeck

There is a little info. on the LOM in my new book just published - Nightmare In Bari: The World War II Liberty Ship Poison Gas Disaster and Cover-up. Check amazon.com for reviews. The book adds a little more info to this still under-reported tragedy. Regards and Sail on! Gerald Reminick
