The Jewish refugees held in concentration camp in Italy were those on board old PENTCHO, wrecked on Camilonisi islet in the Dodecanese coming from the Danube via the Black Sea in October 1940, rescued at the time by gunboat CAMOGLI from Rhodes, taken to Italy on board mv CALINO in 1941 and held in a concentration camp at first in Puglia and then in Calabria near Cosenza, liberated by the Allied advance about 11 September 1943. They had exceptional good luck in that the German troops were around only for a few hours during their hurried retreat from Calabria.
