I have found out much about the career of the Avondale Park, but cannot reconcile the two versions of its convoy route. I would like to dispute any notion that this convoy sailed from the Firth of Forth with lights, ie, making itself a sitting duck. It sailed under naval orders, ships darkened. Lights were not permitted until mid-May 1945. Erroneous reports may have came from the fact that ships in Methil overnight on 7/8 May had hung out the bunting ready for VE day, as had townsfolk. There are two reports from spectators, one group at North Berwick (South shore), one on the Fife (North ) side, which indicate that flashes and rockets were first thought to be celebratory. Then it is recorded that a mood of anger spread amongst the watchers when it was realised that ships were under attack, minutes before the end of the war.
