My Grandfather Walter Wilmshurst was Third Engineer on SS ''Hilderwell''
(West Hartleppol), Mercantile Marine who died Wednesday, 20th December 1916. Age 20. Inscription on Merchant Navy Memorial at Tower Hill London & Roll Of Honour Albert Park Middlesbrough.
The following is information I have researched.
Steel steamship 2494 gross,1610 net, 3727 deadweight tons, lenght 294ft, beam 39ft, depth of hold 20.3ft, triple expansion engine supplied by the Central Marine Engine Works, West Hartlepool, speed 9 knots.
Completed September 1892 by William Gray & Co Ltd, West Hartlepool for G B Harland, West Hartlepool. 1902 sold to T W Willis, West Hartlepool.
December 14th 1916 attacked by a German Submarine off Ushant but escaped.
December 20th 1916 sank in the North Sea after striking a mine, 22 of her crew were lost. Ship was on passage from Bilbao Spain to Middlesbrough with a cargo of iron ore at the time of her loss.
