I'm not 100 % sure, but I believe the National Archives of Norway will have a record of his service on Norwegian ships, even though he was not Norwegian. The Nortraship archives are kept there. Write to them and give them all the information you have, like birthdate etc. It may take a while before they respond but from what I understand they do write back.
