Daughter seeking anyone who knew my father, John Guy (Fern) Betournay, during the war who could confirm his service. He was from Ottawa & he joined Merchant Navy in 1942 when only 15 years old and stayed with them until 1947! Travelled world wide. He actually brought home a spider monkey 1 year. Made the Ottawa citizen that time! Was slightly injured in Portsmouth, England when a bomb hit a ship (I think)and he dived for cover. He got shrapnel in 1 cheek! ouch! All of his own personal records were lost in a fire. Veterans Affairs cannot find any of his records therefore my Mom cannot get the Merchant Navy Benefit. My father passed away suddenly at the age of 59 in 1986. He never received any benefits or recognition for his wartime service. He was a dedicated ANAVETS member who served on the Dominion Command in Montreal for years. He volunteered many hrs of his time to help Veterans and to advocate on their behalf. One of his favorite volunteer activities was delivering Christmas gifts & putting on a show for the Vets at St. Anne de Bellevue Hospital Vet Hospital. If anyone remembers this tall (6'2"), skinny, bilingual, handsome, brown curly haired goofy sailor who loved to dance...please contact me. I need your help!!
