I'm looking for any information on ship's roster and operations. The Michelsen was a U.S. Liberty ship re-named and sailed under the Norwegian flag. Her commander was Captain Jens Lassen Ugland. She was in the slow convoy from the U.S. to Gibraltar (UGS-17) with a load of munitions headed to Palermo, Sicily. She was destroyed by the U-410 off the coast of Tunisia 26 September 1943. Most of the crew was Norwegian, including the 3 survivors (Gunner Ole A. Olsen, Able Seaman Einar Melby and Ordinary Seaman Knut Egil Berg). My grandfather, Lt. James F. Knowlton, was the U.S. Army Cargo Security Officer aboard.
