Hi Theo,
In SEETRANSPORTCHEF NORWEGEN - ABWICKLUNGSSTAB 1945-1946 at Riksarkivet in Oslo there are a lot of information about the Thorland, Polar I, II and III, Lady Corry, etc. Due to some very strange Norwegian regulations, the files are still not free for open research!
In my notes I have references to an Übergabeverhandlung of the Lady Corry, correspondence regarding the whalers and a LOT of information about the Thorland, such as Prisenbericht 16.8.40 from Larvik, Prisenhof Hamburg 30.8.40 + 24.1.41 and a lot of correspondence.
The Thorland must have had an not to qualified master as the vessel was involved in accidents rather often:
* Collision 7.1.43 with M Matthias Stinnes in Alta.
* Collision 12.2.43 with D Santos in Lødingen.
* Collision 15.2.43 with T Amrum in Ålesund.
* Collision 23.2.43 with D Rabe in Kristiansand.
* Collision 2.4.43 with M Belpamela in Salangen.
* Collision 18.4.43 with D Vøringen in Salangen.
* Collision 4.5.43 with M Moshill in Tromsø.
* Stranded 16.8.43 near Steinsvikfluen light.
* Bombed 11.5.44 near Kirkenes.
As far as I remember when reading the files of Thorland, the Norwegian owner worked rather hard to get her returned, and / or being paid, without success. In this case it was not to clever to put her under British flag!
Rgds
