Dear Siri:
The June 2000 issue of "Naval History" published by the United States Naval Institute contains an interesting article concerning Christmas Island. It was written by the son of a United States Navy Lieutenant Commander who in February 1942 became stranded on the island. In early March, when the Japanese arrived, this officer, who was very lucky to be alive, was taken prisoner and eventually ended up on Java.
I never met this officer, whose name was Thomas A. Donovan, but I knew of him from my time on Java and listed him in my journal.
Your library may carry back issues of this magazine. The title of the article is "An Ordeal to Forget".
Cordially.
George.
