Is there anyone with some infos about the causes of the final fate of the USS LCT (5) – 311 ? According to [www.navsource.org] the vessel was damaged during the landing at Gela. She came back in Tunisia on Aug., 9th, 1943 (one month after the landing…), was hit by “a single round of large bore naval gunfire” and finally foundered off Bizerte. According to uboat.net (https://uboat.net/allies/warships/ship/19312.html ) she “foundered off Bizerte, Tunisia after being damaged by gunfire”. Other website repeat the same version.
I wonder if this was a case of friendly fire.
