The Turkish naval transport MAHMUT SEVKET PASA, ex SHIBATA MARU ex MOYUNE, 2,690 tons gross and 2,403 net, built in 1886 by J.L Thompson & Son at Sunderland, owner Guemueciyan I dare, Istanbul, was seized in April 1915 by the Osmanli Govt., armed (2 x 57 mm QF), in July 1915 used as a protection ship or screening escort for the Osmanli battleship BARBAROS HAYREDDIN in the Dardanelles, which was torpedoed and sunk on 8.8.1915 by RN sub E 11.
The steamer was also torpedoed 8.8.1915 by RN sub E 14 off Dogan Aslan and beached. On 12.8.1915 two planes from BEN-MY-CHREE launch a torpedo attack on the stranded vessel. Pilot Fl.Lt. Edmonds reports hitting the ship, but his torpedo failed to explode. The steamer is later refloated, towed to Istanbul for repair and in 1917 resumed service as a transport until 1.1.1918 when decommissioned and returned to the mercantile service.
