Escaut time attack commenced 23.30 hrs and hit probably a few minutes later. Most of the crew were gathered at the stern when they were hit (by a torpedo according to my source but I note Miramar gives a bomb). It exploded in the engineroom below the crew and the captain, the cook and the steward were killed instantly. The other 5 crewmembers were blown away wounded, 3 of them heavy and were rescued from the water, one of them only after 6 hours.Officially the crew were 10 men but 2 were in the hospital from illness. There were also 11 arabs as deck-crew of which 4 were ashore but the other 7 were all killed.
