The HM?S prefix to the names of British colonial warships, 1939-45

I have found reference to an HMFS (Fijian) auxiliary warship ship and an HMKS (Kenyan) auxiliary warship.
What were the rules about adding colony (not Dominion) names into the usual "HMS" formula?
Were they HMKS/HMFS/etc. when under the colonial office administration but just HMS when tansfered to the Admiralty?
