Hallo AXEL!
According to Jochen Brennecke, Schwarze Schiffe - weite See, p. 112-114, the HAPAG-steamer SEATTLE (7369 BRT) was sailing from Curacao via the Denmark street to Norway.
In the morning of 09.04.40 the ship was entering the harbor of Kristiansand at very foggy weather conditions. Suddenly - at 06.23 - the fog was gone and the crew could see 2 cruisers and some smaller warships steaming behind the SEATTLE. At the same time - after showing red signals - the norwegian battery ODDERÖE opens fire on the cruiser KARLSRUHE at 70 hm, which fires back, changes the course and used fog.
Shortly later the SEATTLE was bombed by german aircrafts due to a mistake. Moreover the norwegian destroyer GYLLER, which was situated in the harbor, opens fire on the SEATTLE and scored also some hits. The ship was burning and that was the reason, why her captain run her aground on the rocky coast!
Hope, this will help a bit!
Greetings
Peter from Austria
