After 387 was damaged it was beached and served as a repair ship until it was returned in early 1945 to the states, at which time I came aboard . We refurbished the ship to battle ready and was enroute to the pacific theater when the bomb was dropped. We were returned to the east coast for the task of dumping old ammo. Eleven loads of a 1,000 ton each were hauled into the North Atlantic and dumped. In May 1946 in was decommissioned at Brooklyn Navy Yard.
