CONVOY HN 24 – Norway-U.K.

Ships in HN 24
Left Bergen Apr. 3-1940, arrived Methil Roads on Apr. 7
The list of ships was received from Marek Twardowski, Poland (who in turn received it from Mike Whitley).
Supplemented with info received from Tony Cooper, England (Advance Sailing Telegram and report for HN 24) - His source: Public Records Office, Kew.

Convoy stations are not known.

A document listing all the Norway-U.K. Convoys states that Convoy HN 24 had a total of 40 ships, 3 British, 12 Norwegian, 5 Swedish, 14 Danish, 3 Finnish and 3 Estonian; 6 were bound for the west coast. (Departure date is given as Apr. 4 - this probably means the date it left Norwegian waters).

Additionally, the Danish Estland was scheduled (in ballast for Tyne), but is crossed out on the Advance Sailing Telegram with a note saying "not in convoy"*.

* When comparing the above list with a list of ships received from Don Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database, I find that A. Hauge has not included Convallaria in this convoy, and according to him, Estland did sail.

*********

The convoy of 40 ships (36 of which were neutral, according to this report), was formed up off the Norwegian coast by 09:30 on Apr. 4, and was routed east of the Shetlands - average speed 7 knots on the first 2 days, the weather being good.

The 6 westbound ships were detached off Sumbrugh Head at 17:00 on Apr. 5, escorted by HMS Kimberley. About half an hour later, 2 moored, floating (German) mines, type "Y" were sunk by rifle fire from HMS Somali, in position 126° Sumbrugh Head 17 miles. After dark that day, the escorting HMS Sheffield, Penelope and Cairo parted company, and during the night the weather deteriorated, so that speed of advance was reduced to 4 knots from midnight and onwards.

HMS Tartar was detached at 09:45 on Apr. 6 in order to land a sick man at Scapa, then rejoined at 17:00. Throughout the day, the convoy became very straggled and Matabele was put in charge of the rear portion. Speed continued to be only 4 1/2 knots during the following night, Apr. 6/7, but the next day it could be increased to about 6 knots.

The convoy was dispersed off Methil at 18:30 on Apr. 7, the 2 ships bound for Dundee, Raftsund and Torkel, having previously been detached off the Bell Rock.

Escorts:
The convoy was escorted by destroyers HMS Somali, Mashona, Kimberly, Tartar, Matabele and Codrington and screened by cruisers Sheffield, Glasgow and Cairo. HMS Penelope, and the Polish destroyers Blyskawica and Grom are also mentioned. See also this document, listing escorts for all HN and ON convoys.

Additionally, this external page has some information on this convoy and its escorts in the text under Apr. 4 and Apr. 7 (scroll down in the text).
