Just thought I would move FOULA & ISLAND out in a thread of their own.
FOULA first. This is what I have on her:
5.10: delivered from Akers Mek. Verksted, Oslo (293) as whaler FOULA to Chr. Salvesen & Co., Leith, UK.
Steelhull 92’ x 18’ x 10,3’ brt:115
Engine: Tripple Expansion ( Akers) 50nhk
xx: reg. Port Stanley ( Falkland Isl. ).
10.29: sold to Ds AS King / v. Svend Utne Lothe, Haugesund ( fisherynr. R-70-H ).
season 30: catched for KING in Nordishavet.
After that laid up at Svinholmen in Haugesund together with whaler BUSTA.
34: Ds AS King / . Adolf Lothe, Haugesund ( fisherynr. R-70-H ). Still laid up.
6.39: sold ”en bloc” with BUSTA to Halvor Berntsen, Tau in Ryfylke / Stv. Rebuilt into a combined freighter and fishingvessel. brt:109
Engine: dieselengine of unknown make 130bhk
40: entered service as ms FOULA, but very soon after, taken over by Kriegsmarine.
23.6.43: Sunnken in an air-attack near Fiskerhalvøya, Finnmark on voyage Vardø-Kirkenes with gasoline, herring and tools.
Source: ”Haugesund og den Pelagiske Nordhavsfangst” Leif M.Bjørklund 1991/92.
I Have never seen a picture of her as freighter / fishingvessel, but based upon how these typically turned out ( I have btw seen good pics of how Halvor Berntsens later converted whaler LOVIMA ex STAR XIV ), some things can still be said on this:
FOULA would not look like a whaler over deck anymore. She would have cargohold with one or two hatches in the middle ( where the whalers engine/boilers and superstructure used to be ), new superstructure with wheelhouse and low funnel ( or exhaustpipe ) aft. Mast with boom up front.
If you can shed some light over her fate, Axel, it would be great.
