On 1 October 1940 the Greek steamer AGHIOS NICOLAOS, en route from Santa Fe to Belfast with a cargo of logs and zinc concentrates, was stopped and sunk with gunfire by the Italian submarine MAGGIORE BARACCA in the Atlantic, 423 miles west-north-west of Lisbon. Does anyone know the fate of her crew? BARACCA gave them time to abandon ship and get away in the lifeboats before sinking the AGHIOS NICOLAOS, but I have been unable to find out whether they were ever picked up by other ships and, if so, when and by whom.
