According to war diary Admiral Polarküste at 06.30 on 09. Dec 1941 a convoy left Kirkenes and was heading towards Tromsö at a speed of 10 knots.
It consisted of steamers "Theresia Russ", "Steinbeck" and "Magdalena Vinnen" and Vermessungsschiff "Coburg" together with Vorpostenboote "Nordwind", "Nordriff" and "Polarsonne".

Calculating on Google Earth the distance from Kirkenes to the approximate point of attack it is about 100 nautical miles on a course a ship would sail. So with some delay because of bad weather and/or a slightly different course than calculated by me there is a good chance that this might have been the convoy (and bad visibility might well explain the mixing up of a destroyer with a Vp-boat).
