HM whaler SARNA was a Salvesen vessel of 268 tons grt, built by Smith's Dock at South Bank as their yard no. 933, launched 30.7.1930, based in South Africa, requisitioned by the Royal Navy in March 1940 there as an auxiliary minesweeper. She arrived Durban on 22 Dec. 1940, and then at Kilindini (Kenya) from Durban on 7 Jan. 1941, bound for the Mediterranean as flotilla leader of the 142nd Minesweeping Group under the temporary skipper Lt. W.T. Allen RNR. The other whalers in the Group sailing together with her were SOIKA, SOTRA, SVANA. During the final part of her journey she was mined in the Suez Canal.
