Working at present on a manuscript, which deals with the ships built new or rebuilt in a larger extent by the former Kieler Howaldtswerke AG, Kiel, Germany, I had had a look to the page with "Washington Express" built in 1933 by A/BV Götaverken. In my opinion, the page contains some small errors.
These are:
1.) The ship had had the Yard-Nr. 476 and not 676; the sistership "California Express" were built under the Yard-Nr. 477.
Sources: General Arrangement Plan of "Washington Express"; Lloyds Register Books; German Ship Registers
2.) The two main engines were designed and built by A/B Götaverken.
Sources: see above
And an additional information:
The ship were reengined as "Augustenburg" in April/May 1958 by Kieler Howaldtswerke AG. The new main engines were 2 MAM Diesels, two stroke, each 7 Cylinders, single acting, each 1.803 kW; 160 Rev./min., built by the shipyard.
Sources: Lloyds Register Books; Internal Newsletter of the yard.
The ship sank in the English Channel, abt. 20 Mile southeast of the Isle of Wight on the possition as mentioned.
And now a request:
I am searching for fotos of the Norwegian tankers "Norholm", later "Haukefjell" and "Norheim", later "Kollgrim". Both ships were Empire-Type-Tankers and were reengined in 1949 resp. 1950 by Kieler Howaldtswerke. During World War II they were managed by Nortraship.
Bbest regards
