Most probably on a mine. The wreck was found in June 1999 by Swedish divers and on the following links you can see pictures of the wreck and some side scan sonar images. The sub is broken in two after a heavy explosion. There were German minefields in this area. The last radio transmission from the S-8 was made on October 11, 1941. At that time she was still in the Gulf of Finland. Exact date of loss has not been established.
